Just finished a valve job on my 88 1500 4x4 that has a 5.7 and runs beautiful, but; the timming recomendation on the fan shroud recomends 0 degrees. The truck will not run on that. Is there anything that needs to be disconected to keep the timming from being raised by the computer while I set the timming. I know how to set it manually ( listening for ping and listening for starter kick back) but I would like to set it with a lite. thanks Clayton (I am new to forum)

There Will very likely be a timing advance wire that you will need to unplug in order to set the timing. Im going to see if I can come up with where that may be located for you.
Also I moved this to the correct forum.

Brian, thanks for yor kindness. 60 year olds just have a different mindset on how to use these forums. Where did I go wrong on the posting? Any way you could help with finding the correct wire is appreciated. It is the horse shoe bracket type front with a serpintine belt. The wires from the distributor meets up with the ones from the wireing harness and plug into the coil. I will put this page in my favorites in order to get back to you. Thanks again

No problem I understand that the lay of a new forum can be confusing, I just moved the thread from the regionals to the gas engine discussion area. Now on the few GM vehicles that I have Timed that have the timing advance the wire has been located under the passenger side dash area and usually has a quick disconnect connector. The color of this wire varies from model to model but alway seems to be fairly noticeable. Take a look under there and see if anything pops out at you.

Brian, the color of the wire should be white or yellow. I believe that an 88' should be white.
Clayton, welcome to the forum! The wire you will be looking for should be called a spout connector look for a white wire coming from the Ignition-module, it will come to a "loop" with a plug! Unplug that and you will be able to set base timing.
If I'm not mistaking you should be at about 10* advanced from TDC!

You are probably correct. I just came in and it is dark but I tried to find the wire with a flashlite. The only thing that is obvious is 2 wires that come from the main hard drive that are taped outside of the 1 1/4 inch wiring harness bundle they are purple with thin white stripes.they come to a conector that seems to have an open transistor, one end of the transistor goes to one side of the connector and the other end of the transistor goes to the other. The conector was taped to the wiring harness. If that is not it I will have to pull the glove box out to look further. You are a great help and I thank you very much. I am going to attempt to send a scaned drawing of what I found. ------- No luck with the drawing, I just don't know to get it on this page.

Just wanted to say thanks to all who helped guide me to find the timing advance disconnect. I now have it set correctly. With the help I received I knew it had to be somewhere close to the main wiring harness. After taking the glove box out there was nothing to be seen that gave me confidence in disconnecting anything. I went under the hood and took the plastic cover off where the fuel pump relay and several other electrical junctions are and there was a BLACK AND TAN wire with a disconnect. I unplugged it set the timing on 0 TDC, plugged it back up and the timing went extremely high. Test drove and it is slick. Thanks again
