Regarding disabling of Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
I started to eliminate DRLs on my 2008 Chev Silverado, but have not got back to finish the job.
There are 2 DRL fuses in the large fuse box (about the size of a battery) under the hood on the drivers side of the engine compartment.
On my vehicle they are labled DRL (15A) and DRL 2 (15A). They are at locations 31 and 33 on my box.
I got unexpected results when I tried to disable them for two reasons:
1) I don't think I let the vehicle run long enough to stabilize in the start up sequence.
2) It was near dusk, and I believe the nighttime headlights were automatically turning on (which I thought were the running lights).
I will try to get back on this next week and post my findings.
Also -----------
Around 2000, I was working with lighting companies (Osram and Phillips) who were then just making HID lamps for Porsch, Mercedes, Audi,... back then.
I agree that fully igniting the lamps reduce life. The ignitor hits the electrodes with thousands of volts to start the arc lamps.
They did add a different gas to the mixture that would start easier and faster, so when you flash your light at someone you would not get the ignition damage.
I do not know the start up sequencing used when you start your HID equipped truck, so I have no info to offer.
In the past, cost and replacement was not an issue. On a Turbo Carrara, the entire pair of headlights cost around $3000 to replace back then, but if you have a $100,000+ car, who cares.
