Opel will get re-styled Chevrolet Volt version in Europe

GM will build Opel and Vauxhall versions of the upcoming Chevrolet Volt in the U.S. The European versions will make their debut in 2012. The Opel version of the plug-in electric hybrid will be the same as the Volt with different styling.

GM will build the cars alongside the Chevrolet Volt at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant. According to Carl-Peter Forster, president of GM Europe, the European version of the Volt won’t be affordable. He said that pricing could be “up to 10,000 euros more than a comparable model with a conventional powertrain.”

Bob Lutz recently said that GM will built at least 10,000 units of the Volt in its first year. The following year output will be increased to 60,000. Lutz and other executives expect pricing to be close to $40,000 unless the government offers some major incentives.

GM is expected to unveil the production version of the Volt later this September.
