Hello everyone
I just wanted to make a thread regarding my 2002 Blazer 4x4 4.3. It threw a SES light the other day and after a nice stay at the dealership they said the cat went bad. It was replaced undr Chevys emission equipment warrenty so thats good. But i was wondering... How often do these go bad? WHo else has had a cat go bad on them?

According to the manufacturers, a catalytic converter should never go bad if the vehicle is properly maintained. But we all know how that goes.
So to answer your question, their is no proper life expectancy. They die when they die!

I got my truck back today, big difference in power. No more lag in down shifts or stuttering. The guy said the Cat had overheated or partially melted, whatever that meens. I wouldn't be surprised, since i go up and down mountains to get anywhere.
Didn't cost me a penny either.

They don't just go bad. If it overheated and melted the inside it was caused by something else. Usually this is caused by a lean condition.Replacing the converter is just a temporary fix usually. You need to check out your fuel system. You could have a weak fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter. I recently had this problem on my 03 Avalanche. Got a tank of bad gas. Fine rust particles almost completely clogged the fuel filter causing a lean condition. Overheated both converters and eventually killed the fuel pump. Cost me about $700 to fix doing it myself.

mine has been bad for the last 10k miles. If it helped you that much maybe ill finally replace mine this year. i also need a new muffler because the ground put a hole in it. i wish the warranty would cover me but i have 141,000 on mine.
