This GM service bulliten might apply to your vehicle:

TSB # 01-07-30-023A
Harsh 1-2 Upshift, SES, MIL, or CEL Illuminated, DTC P1870 Set (Replace Valve Body)
1996 Buick Roadmaster
1996 Cadillac Fleetwood
1999-2000 Cadillac Escalade
1996-2000 Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette
1996-2000 Pontiac Firebird
1996-2000 Chevrolet and GMC Light Duty Truck Models
1996-2000 Oldsmobile Bravada
with 4L60-E Automatic Transmission (RPO M30)
Built Prior to January 15, 1999 (Julian Date 9015)
This bulletin is being revised to update the Parts Information.

Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-07-30-023 (Section 07 -- Transmission/Transaxle).
Condition
Some customers may comment on a harsh 1-2 upshift and the Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon indicator is illuminated.
Diagnosis
Typically, these vehicles will have been driven more than 32,000 km (20,000 mi) before this condition occurs.
The scan tool may show a DTC P1870 set as a history code.
A harsh 1-2 shift or DTC P1870, caused by wear in the control valve body, may be difficult to duplicate when the transmission temperature is below 93°C (200°F).
Cause
The condition may be due to wear in the control valve body. This wear occurs in the bore that contains the TCC isolator and regulator valves, and results in poor, or no, TCC apply.

Important
DTC P1870 is a type B code. The conditions for setting the P1870 DTC must occur on TWO CONSECUTIVE TRIPS (ignition cycles, with a drive cycle) before setting a P1870 history code.
When the conditions for setting DTC P1870 are met (first trip), the PCM commands maximum line pressure and harsh 1-2 shifts are the result.
This may result in a harsh 1-2 shift with no history code if the conditions for setting the DTC required for the second trip are not met, on two consecutive trips (Ignition cycles, with a drive cycle).

When the conditions for setting the DTC are met, on the second consecutive trip, a DTC P1870 is stored as a history code.
When the P1870 code is stored, the PCM will turn on the Service Engine Soon (SES), Check Engine Light (CEL), or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
Correction
Install a control valve body with the revised TCC regulator and isolator valves. These valves are used in all transmissions produced after January 15, 1999 (Julian Date 9015), and all of the service parts currently available through GMSPO contain revised TCC regulator and isolator valves.

Important
If all of the following conditions are true, it is not necessary to rebuild the transmission or to replace additional transmission components beyond the control valve body.
Transmission operation is normal before the transmission reaches operating temperature, or before DTC P1870 is set (no slips, flares, or missing gears).
The torque converter is not blue or overheated.
The transmission fluid is not burned or has no burned odor.
The transmission fluid pan contains no abnormal debris (clutch material, bronze, brass, or metal fragments

Hi -- I just bought a 1997 S10 LS Pickup. My first long trip with it, (over 10 miles), The service engine light came on. A friend of ours has a scanner and it came up with code 1870. We know it's a transmission code, but what does it mean exactly? What normally needs to be replaced? Is it expensive? We also cleared it so the service engine light would go off, and it hasn't come back on .. this was done about 3 days ago.
Any help, tips, or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

The code means it senses a transmission slippage. If it is like the first post is describing, replacing he valve body should be the fix.

Very good info! Found it searching through google. I just bought a 98 firebird and on the drive home I noticed some slipping out of overdrive and a grinding noise while doing it so I knew it was the TCC. I replaced the torque converter with a rebuilt one and put a shift correction kit from Superior Transmission in. One thing I didn't realize was it has you drill out the reverse boost valve and someone had already but a Sonnax boost valve in it so I ended up replacing it with the same one. I also found it I had aTransgo shift seperator plate installed as well. I called the people at Superior Transmission and they said it should be fine using it with the kit. It was the 4L60E-L kit I believe. I ended up not messing with the Iso and Reg apply valve because the description on the site said it would fix the P1870 code. Well I did all this and put it all back together just to have the same thing happen again. What a pain. So I've just pulled my valve body off again and I see that the previous owners installed the Sonnax valve. So I don't know exactly what could be wrong. I am thinking about trying a newer valve body (like you listed older than jan 15 '99) and see if that fixes it because I don't know where else to to go from here. Maybe a new pump? I don't want to dump a lot of money into it if I can just get a used one from the junkyard for cheap. Anyone tried this valve body replacement fix and have it work? Or so something else to fix it? I've read an older TSB that says to get your PCM reprogrammed. Anyone try that?

Just found this site which has a newer bullitin that what you posted, but says to but a valve body newer than Jan 15, '00 (0015). Still calls out the iso valve and reg apply vlv.

code p1870 - Truck Forum

Also check out this site for really good info on it! It points out another valve (actuator feed limit valve) in the valve body which could be a reason it's doing this.

Looks like the bulletin was revised after our initial input on here. I have corrected this. Thanks.

Just got the P1870 code.
Fluid very dark
Read the GM bulletin #01-07-30-023a

What are my chances it is just the valve body?
Can I continue to drive it or can major problems occur?

Anyone have an idea of cost to do this (self or if taken someplace?

Do the dealers have this info and replaced the valve bodies or try to screw you for a complete rebuild?
